Books Like Sookie Stackhouse: 7 Paranormal Series for Fans of Snark and Small-Town Secrets
You finished the last Sookie Stackhouse book, closed the cover, and felt that specific kind of loss. The good news? Plenty of paranormal series scratch the same itch. The bad news? Most "books like Sookie" lists are the same five titles recycled and nobody tells you why they work.
So let's start there. What do Sookie fans actually love?
- A heroine who talks back. Sookie is sweet on the outside and sharp on the inside, and she never stays quiet when something's wrong.
- A small, specific world. A bar. A town. A pack, a coven, a neighborhood. The supernatural lives right next door.
- Romance with real stakes. Attraction, yes, but also trust, danger, and choices that cost something.
- Humor that deepens the story. The funniest lines come from characters you actually care about.
If that's your list, here are seven series to try next. A few are by other authors, a couple are mine, and I'll be honest about which is which.
1. Mercy Thompson by Patricia Briggs
Mercy is a mechanic who happens to be a shapeshifter, and she lives right in the middle of werewolf politics and vampire trouble. If you loved Sookie holding her own in a world full of things that could eat her, start here. Begin with Moon Called.
2. Kate Daniels by Ilona Andrews
Grittier and more action-heavy, with a sword-swinging heroine in a city where magic comes and goes like the weather. It has bite, banter, and a slow-building love story. Begin with Magic Bites.
3. Charley Davidson by Darynda Jones
A private investigator who also happens to be the grim reaper. The humor is quick and the mysteries keep you turning pages. Begin with First Grave on the Right.
4. The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher
A male lead this time, but Harry Dresden is a wizard private eye in Chicago with the same sarcastic streak and a talent for trouble. Begin with Storm Front.
5. The Victoria Laurie Psychic Eye Mysteries
Abby Cooper is a professional psychic who keeps getting dragged into real cases. It's lighter and funnier than most on this list. Begin with Abby Cooper, Psychic Eye.
6. The Diana Hawthorne Psychic Mysteries (mine)
Diana Hawthorne is sarcastic, smart-mouthed, and sees more than most people, except when it comes to her own past. She runs a psychic practice with her flamboyant, perpetually late assistant Renaldo, until a missing person case lands on her doorstep and a broody partner she can't read walks into her life. Think mythology with a modern twist, found family, and a whole lot of snark. Start with Oracle, or taste her world first with the quick prequel The Final Five.
7. Accidental Alpha (also mine)
Ella Breene is over forty, freshly divorced, and starting over in a new town when a chance encounter with a dying Alpha drops her into the middle of a divided werewolf pack. It's like dealing with her ex-husband, but with claws, fangs, and a lot more chaos. If you love a heroine who refuses to stay small, this is a pack worth joining. Start with Midlife Wolf Bite.
How to pick your first one
- Want the closest feel to Sookie? Mercy Thompson or Charley Davidson.
- Want more action? Kate Daniels or the Dresden Files.
- Want a smart-mouthed psychic? Abby Cooper or Diana Hawthorne.
